While the Hammond Castle Museum, a historic landmark built in the late 1920s, is not handicapped accessible for assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers due to the number of stairs, it does allow service dogs on the premises.
This Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places for over 50 years, presents challenges for visitors with mobility impairments, as it features numerous stairs. Accessing the Lobby and Museum Shop from the parking lot requires descending approximately 30 exterior stone stairs, with only a portion having a railing. Further, navigating through all galleries involves over 160 total steps across more than six levels, and most galleries do not have visitor seating.
The Museum is committed to providing reasonable accommodations and alternatives to visitors in need of additional assistance, for more information, contact us at: [email protected].
Our address is 80 Hesperus Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930.
Heavy traffic & limited parking in the Museum’s parking lot should be considered when planning your travel time.
Take I-95 North out of Boston to Exit 45, then Route 128 North to Exit 53 (Route 133 toward West Gloucester / Essex.) Turn right onto Route 133 to the very end of that highway, and with the ocean directly in front of you, turn right onto Route 127. Approximately 3/4 of a mile from that intersection, the road will begin to narrow. Look for a blue and white sign on your left for the museum, and turn onto Hesperus Avenue. The Museum is just a few blocks down Hesperus Avenue on your left. Park in the lot off the street, and take the walkway and stairs down to the entrance.
Parking Notice: Guests arriving by personal vehicle are now required to make advance reservations. Due to new restrictions by the City of Gloucester, street parking is no longer permitted on Hesperus Avenue approaching the Museum. With limited parking, we strongly encourage advance reservations. Weekends in particular tend to be busy; please plan ahead and purchase your admission tickets in advance. We recommend you arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled entrance time to allow for on-site parking and the walk down to the Museum. We can not guarantee admission to those without a reservation.
Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation or ride-share services to the Museum as parking is limited. Visiting from Boston is easy with public transportation.
UPDATE: As of July 1, 2026, the Cape Ann Transit Authority (CATA) has a formal bus stop at the Museum.
Take the MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail Line from North Station to Gloucester Station. From there, it’s approximately a half-mile walk to the downtown CATA Main Street bus stop, where you can board the route serving Hammond Castle Museum. CATA service is free for all riders.
We encourage guests arriving by ride-share to plan their departure ahead of their visit to ensure a seamless and stress-free experience. Cellular service is unreliable in the Museum and on the grounds, including the parking lot.
