Virtual Auditions / Open Casting Call: The Madness within the Abbadia Mare at Hammond Castle Museum

We are seeking non-equity performers to join the cast of The Madness of Abbadia Mare, the newest original promenade theater production at Hammond Castle Museum.

This unique performance begins on the drawbridge and winds through multiple rooms within the castle. Each actor is stationed in a unique room within the Museum and will perform a 6–10 minute monologue as part of the story. Performances begin at 6 PM and run every 15 minutes as audiences move through the Museum. To create an intimate atmosphere, each performance is limited to 15 audience members at a time. There is one 15-minute session with no scheduled performance to allow a break for the cast.
📅 Key Dates

• Auditions close: Tuesday, September 30th
• In-person rehearsals: Tuesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 15
• Additional rehearsals/meetings: Scheduled over Zoom at cast availability
• Performances: Monday, October 20 and Tuesday, October 21 (ending ~10 PM), and Wednesday, October 22 (ending ~11 PM)
• This is a paid role. All actors will receive a $400 stipend for their participation.

John Hays Hammond Jr.

Male presenting
Age Range: late 20s to 40s
Prolific American inventor with over 500 patents by the time of death. Owner/visionary of the castle and the vast collection of antiquities.

Leslie Hillman
Male presenting
Age Range: 20s to 30s
Hammond’s English butler, who works at the castle. A hard worker dedicated to his job, who would do most anything to maintain that reputation.

Leslie Buswell
Male presenting
Age Range: late 20s to 40s
English actor and member of the American Ambulance Service in WWI; Hammond’s close friend and one of his romantic partners.

Elin Watters
Female presenting
Age Range: 20s to 30s
Formerly from Sweden, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1920. Chambermaid at the castle, but previously worked for Hammond at Lookout Hill (parents’ home).

Irene Fenton Hammond
Female presenting
Age Range: 30s to 40s
Accomplished writer (published astrologer) and artist (painting), and a Gloucester local. Married to John Hays Hammond Jr..

Natalie Hays Hammond
Female presenting
Age Range: 20s to 30s
Accomplished fiber artist (cross stitch), Colonel in the Massachusetts Women’s Defense Corps. During WWII. Sister of John Hays Hammond Jr.. Later founded the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem, NY.
